It’s the unique climate and soil in the Lot-et-Garonne and surrounding areas that makes this corner of south-west France perfect for growing Ente plums. This delicate variety needs a lot of sun and flourishes in clay and limestone soil.
The production area for Agen prunes stretches over 118 cantons and 6 departments in the south-west : Lot-et-Garonne (2/3 of the total production), Dordogne, Gironde, Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers and Lot.
Production is limited to this area and adheres to a strict set of rules, the rigorous application of which led to the region being awarded IGP protection in November 2002.
This distinction is awarded by the highest levels in the EU, and guarantees that Agen prunes can only be produced from fruit grown in Ente plum orchards in the designated production area, and which has been dried, packed and processed by companies located in this same territory.
Only prunes from this specific area can bear the label “PRUNEAUX D'AGEN”.
This policy is supported by a strict traceability programme. Regular checks are made by an independent certification agency (QUALISUD) from the orchard to the producer and right up to the final consumer, guaranteeing a unique, high-quality product that can be found nowhere else on earth.
